Training objectives

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
The aim of the course is to present the main clinical problems encountered in the pediatric population concerning specific oral disorders and oral manifestations of sistemic disorders. The purpose is to provide the basic knowledge for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric diseases with oral lesions.
PEDIATRICS
The aim of the course is to provide the basic knowledge of growth and psycho-somatic development from birth to adolescence
Other topics of the course are:
-pediatric nutrition, mineral and vitamin supplementations
-syndromes, and acute/chronic systemic disease with specific involvement of the oral cavity
ORTHODONTICS
During the first course in Orthodontics, students are fully trained in correct diagnosis in growing patients. Several methods necessary for identifying the type of malocclusion (static and dynamic cephalometry) are taught, as well as the causes that contribute to their development, and the various stages of growth in the patient.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the oral cavity. General knowledge of pediatrics.
A knowledge of cranial anatomy, basic radiology, the phases of dentition, and the basic psychology of growing patients.

Course programme

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
First examination in Paediatric Dentistry: approach and communication, environment characteristics
Features and development of the deciduous and permanent dentition: the dental abnormalities
Radiology in pediatric dentistry
Disorders of the oral mucosa in pediatric dentistry. Trauma
Treatment of carious lesions. Endodontic treatment in children. Prevention
PEDIATRICS
Growth and development from birth to adolescence (auxometry, pubertal changes and psycho-motor development)
Pediatric nutrition (brestmilk, formula-feeding, weaning)
Specific mineral (calcium, iron) and vitamin (vitamin D and K) requirements; fluoroprophylaxis
Down syndrome. Celiac disease
Exanthematous Disease of Childhood with specific involvement of oral cavity
Abuse and neglect
ORTHODONTICS
Introduction to orthognathodontics, Diagnosis in growing and adult patients, Standard and adjunctive orthodontic records, Teleradiographical anatomy, Cephalometric points and planes, Static cephalometry (integrated Tweed technique), Cranial growth according to Enlow, Dynamic cephalometry (Enlow technique), Evolution of the arches during the 1st and 2nd stages of eruption, Analysis of models, Unhealthy habits and preventing malocclusions before they arise (preventative orthodontics), Class I, II, and III malocclusions.

Lectures on theory and practical workshops under the supervision of a tutor

Learning assessment procedures

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
A 15-20 minutes oral examination is realized for each student. During the exam, the candidate answers to 4 or 5 questions about the main issues of the course. The teacher sometimes hypothesizes clinical situations and photos of clinical cases are used to test the acquired knowledge of the student.
PEDIATRICS
Quiz testing: multiple choice quizzes (in general 18 items;1.5 score for each correct answer) and open question (in general 2; max 3 score for a complete answer), lasting 20 minutes. Only 1 written test year will be allowed during the academic year
Oral examination with 2-3 questions lasting about 30 minutes; Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of several items as the knowledge of the topics and the practical aspects, the interdisciplinary connections across subject areas and the language skills
ORTHODONTICS
Written exam with multiple choice questions (25 questions with 4 possible answers of which one is correct), 5 open questions (in which the student is required to summarise a diagnostic procedure). The exam lasts for 90 minutes. Marks are given as the sum of the correct answers; no negative marking is applied.
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TESTS.
