Training objectives

This course is intended to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the use of dental implants for oral rehabilitation. Treatment planning options, surgical techniques, use of different implant systems and prosthetic solutions will be discussed and critically analyzed.
The course will provide students with knowledge on rationale and clinical application of dental implants and discuss contemporary treatment planning modalities for oral rehabilitation. The following implant related topics will be covered during the course ( I semester)
-History of Dental implants
-Principles of Osseointegration
-Implant Biomaterials/ Implant Designs
-Indications and Contraindications of Dental Implants
-Patient Selection for Implant Therapy
-Surgical Protocols and Surgical Placement of Dental Implants
-Implant therapy in fully edentulous patients

Prerequisites

It is highly recommended that each student possesses a deep knowledge of periodontology.

Didactic methods

Didactic Methods
The topics will be discussed in seminars covering pertinent original scientific articles. The course director or the seminar coordinator will provide teaching material to the students prior to the session. ( ie.Collection of related articles, PDF of lectures and other reference material etc.). Upon presentation of pertinent literature, a sequence of working questions will be developed by the class divided in groups that , in the follow up section, will organize/expand the didactic material and will give a 10 minutes PPT presentation each, with the aim of answering the questions topic.
Discussion will follow under supervision of the seminar coordinator.
For each session a final lecture will be presented by the seminar coordinator to summarize the topic.
A practical training will include treatment planning of complex cases. A component of the course will be performed in the lab including Hands-on exsercises on: computer planning, osteotomy preparation, implant placement, immediate implant provisionalization and implant impression.
Additional ad-hoc seminars will be offered by expert clinicians.

Learning assessment procedures

Mid term written test. The test will consist of 50 multiple choice questions. The candidate will have 50 minutes to answer the questions. The evalutation will be calculated based on the number of wrong answers according to the following criteria:
9 score 0-5 wrong answers
8 score - 6-8
7 score - 9-11
6 score - 12-15
5 score - 16-18
0 score - > 18
The final grade will be determined by the following components: 30% on oral presentations and class participation, 30% on mid-term written examination and 40% on the final oral examination.
To improve the grades, upon request of the student, a remediation paper of at least 10 pages and 15 references on a topic to be decided by the course director must presented at the time of the final oral examination.
