Training objectives

Knowledge of the main diseases of tissues and systems, with special regard to head and neck district.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of histology, anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, physiology and general pathology.

Course programme

BLOOD VESSELS AND HEART
Arteries: Atherosclerosis, aneurysms, thromboembolism. Veins: Thrombosis, phlebitis, thromboembolism. Heart: Ischemic heart disease, infarction. endocarditis, cardiomyopathies, heart failure.
HEMATOPOIETIC SYSTEM
Lymph nodes: lymphadenitis, lymphomas (classification and staging). Blood: leukemias (introduction).
RESPIRATORY TRACT
Lung: Edema, congestion, haemorrhage, infarction. Emphysema, bronchitis and bronchopneumonias. Infections, interstitial pneumonias, fibrosing diseases. Tuberculosis. Tumors.
HEAD AND NECK.
Oral cavity: inflammatory-reactive lesions, infections. Tumors and preneoplastic lesions. Odontogenic cysts and tumors. Salivary glands. Sialadenitis, tumors, tumor-like lesions.
Pharynx and larynX: inflammations, tumors.
GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT
Esophagus: Esophagitis, carcinoma.
Stomach: gastritis, tumors.
Colon: idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease. Ischemic disease, infarction. Tumors and preneoplastic lesions.
Liver: hepatitis, tumors (introduction).
Pancreas: pancreatitis, tumors (introduction).
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Brain: hemorrages, infarction, aneurysms, tumors (introduction).

Didactic methods

Lectures. All the slides of the course are available.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam. The exam lasts about 30 minutes and it entails about three main questions: one about organs different from oral cavity, one on teeth and gums and one on oral cavity/salivar glands. Evaluation is mainly based on students’ critical approach to the topics and connection among previous subjects of study (especially anatomy, physiology, general pathology)
