Training objectives

The integrated course of Endocrine, kidney and gastrointestinal diseases includes the modules of:
Endocrinology;
Gastroenterology;
Nephrology.
The course aims at explaining the main endocrine, renal and gastrointestinal diseases from their pathophysiological grounds to clinical manifestations.
The course as well aims at providing knowledge concerning the molecular, anatomical and pathological basis, the clinical, biochemical and instrumental diagnostic approach; the prevention actions, the possible therapeutic approaches and prognostic possibilities of endocrine, kidney, uninary tract and gastrointestinal system.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
In terms of knowledge:
• recognize, diagnose, and treat the main endocrine, kidney, uninary tract and gastrointestinal system
• identify the role of gender/sex differences

The main acquired abilities will be:
- interpret the main laboratory results and instrumental evaluations
- show the patient the main aspects of the disease, suggesting them the correct lifestyle
- know how to address clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to these diseases.

Modulo: 003467 - ENDOCRINOLOGIA
------------------------------------------------------------
Pathologic aspects of endocrine and metabolic diseases.
Diagnostic procedures (clinical, biochemical and imaging) for endocrine and metabolic diseases. Molecular analysis in the diagnosis of endocrine neoplasia. Role of gender-related differences concerning incidence, physiopathology, diagnosis and therapy in endocrine diseases.
Lectures concerning the pathophysiological and clinical aspects of the endocrine and metabolic disorders, with specific reference to:
- Thyroid gland: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, goiter, thyroid nodule and thyroid cancer.
- Physiopathology of calcium and bone metabolism. Osteoporosis. Parathyroid diseases: hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, pseudo-hypoparathyroidism.
- Physiopathology of the hypothalamo-pituitary system. Anterior pituitary diseases (pituitary adenomas, excess or deficiency of anterior pituitary hormone production). Neurohypophysis: vasopressin and oxitocin. Diabetes insipidus.
- Male and female hyogonadism. Menstrual disturbances. Male and female infertility.
- Adrenal gland: adrenal insufficiency, Cushing syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hyperaldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, adrenal incidentaloma.
- Definition and endocrine aspects of hypertension.
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia; Neuroendocrine neoplasms.
- Diabetes mellitus: classification, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, complications, treatment and monitoring.
- Hypoglycemic syndromes.
- Obesity. Dyslipidemia. Metabolic syndrome.
- Clinical aspects of growth and growth disorders. Disorders of sexual differentiation.
Role of gender-related issues.Medical therapy and/or surgical approach to neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. Practical lessons with the patients and discussion on clinical cases.

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 015126/2 - GASTROENTEROLOGIA
------------------------------------------------------------
The aim of the course is to give the more correct clinical approach for the following diseases:
- Liver diseases
- Liver cirrhosis and its complications
- Epidemiology of alcohol consumption
- Alcohol-related liver diseases

------------------------------------------------------------
Modulo: 015366/2 - NEFROLOGIA
------------------------------------------------------------
NEPHROLOGY
General diagnostic of renal diseases: proteinuria, haematuria, creatininemia, clearance of creatinine and glomerular filtration. Primary and secondary glomerular nephropathies; clinical aspects, diagnosis and therapy. Hydratation and electrolytes disorders: potassium and acid-base balance disorders. Acute and chronic, infective and non infective, tubular-interstitial nephropaties. Cystic renal diseases. Acute and chronic vascular nephropaties. Acute kidney failure: etiology, physiology, clinical aspects and therapy. Chronic kidney failure: etiology, physiology, clinical aspects, therapy and complications. Kidney dialysis and kidney transplantation. Protecting the kidney: general aspects.
Clinical management of nephrovascular hypertension, and renal lithiasis.
Moreover, the integration of knowledge of specific sex/gender factors of certain diseases will represent important issue, with particular attention to the differences, in an integrated diagnostic-therapeutic olistic pathway.

Learning assessment procedures

The learning verification will be carried out by a written exam consisting in 80 questions for a total duration of 90 minutes. The questions will be formulated with multiple choice questions (4 or 5 options for each question) relating to all the educational objectives of the course.
The questions will be prepared in order to verify the knowledge acquired by the student about the Endocrinology (30 questions), Nephrology (20 questions) and Gastroenterology (30 questions).
Each question will have the same weight and there will be no penalty for incorrect or non-given answers.
The exam mark is assigned in a scale out of thirty. The minimum mark of 18/30 is achieved by those who will answer correctly to 60% of the questions of each module: 18 out of 30 for Endocrinology and Gastroenterology, 12 out of 20 for Nephrology.
The maximum mark of 30 cum laude is achieved by those who will answer correctly over 95% of the total questions (>76 out of 80 total questions).
