Training objectives

To know the main mechanisms of action of antimicrobial drugs with particular interest to the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the main categories of drugs.
Basics of possible interactions of antimicrobials with other drugs in patients with more comorbidities.
Use of antimicrobials in clinical practice in hospitalized and community patients.
Main notions on the mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics and tools to contain / address them.

Prerequisites

Principles of microbiology and clinical microbiology.
Principles of general pharmacology.
Principles of infectious diseases.

Course programme

Mechanism of action of the main antibacterial drugs: inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis and other components of the cell wall, inhibition of DNA replication, inhibition of DNA transcription, inhibition of translation, inhibition of protein synthesis, alteration of membrane potential and function of cell membranes, antimetabolites.
Mechanisms of resistance of bacteria to chemotherapics: pathophysiological mechanisms, characteristics of antibiotic resistance, multiresistance, prevention of bacterial resistance.
Principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the main anti-infective drugs: absorption, transport, metabolism, distribution, elimination, concentration and half-lives in plasma.
Choice of antibacterial chemotherapy and targeted therapy: interpretation of the antibiogram and application in clinical practice.
Reasoned therapy of the main infectious diseases: sepsis, endocarditis, pneumonia and bronchitis, pharyngotonsillitis, meningitis, urinary tract and prostatitis infections, biliary tract infections, enteritis, osteomyelitis, prosthetic infections and devices (pace makers, defibrillators, neurostimulators).
Antifungal agents: mechanism of action of different classes and their pharmacokinetics.
Chemotherapy of deep and systemic mycoses.
Chemotherapy of the main human parasitoses: malaria, toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, oxyuriasis, ascaridosis, ancylostomosis, teniasis.
Antiviral chemotherapy: anti-herpes and anti-Cytomegalovirus, antiretroviral, anti-flu drugs.
Antimicrobial therapy in the immunocompromised and immunosuppressed.
Anti-infective chemotherapy in patients with renal and hepatic failure.
Antimicrobial therapy during pregnancy and lactation.
