Training objectives

The main goal of the course is to provide students the knowledge of both elective and emergent surgical conditions affecting the patient with cancer; a better understanding of the pathological conditions related to growth, progression and complications of cancer disease; an update on the presurgical imaging of the patient with cancer; the understanding of the concepts of radical, cytoreductive, preventive surgery and of surgical treatment of recurrent and metastatic disease as well.

Prerequisites

Proper knowledge of general pathology, cancer biology and general oncology, medical and surgical methodology.

Course programme

Each subject has been structured to collect the most number of clinical aspects related to cancer patient with surgical problems.
The basic steps in the surgical decision making process are also emphasized. Partecipants are also invited to share with personal contributions (papers, texts, questions) and a direct attendance to the clinical activities is allowed. Contributions and personal data in a selected bibliography are an aid to a better understanding of the arguments.

Didactic methods

Lectures , inspired by the system PBL ( Problem-Based Learning ) and an interactive mode by stimulating the learner response to the presentation and discussion of the topics .
Organization of mini - seminars with faculty specialists in specific topics .
Free exercises through direct participation (only visual ) in the operating room , for those interested.

Learning assessment procedures

The aim of the examination is to test the level of achievement of the previously mentioned educational goals .
They are eligible to take the exam only students who have participated in at least 6 out of 8 meetings .
The examination consists of a single trial. It 's a quiz test (multiple choice questions ) on all topics covered in the course , in the mini - seminars and during free practice in the Operating Room .
There will be 31 questions. Each correct answers are worth 1 point. To pass the exam you need to acquire a minimum of 18 points (corresponding to 18 correct answers out of 30). The correct answer to all questions is the score of 30 with honors. If the score proves inferior to 18, the student will have to retake the exam. The estimated time for the test is 1 hour. The use of texts, PC, smart phone or other devices is not allowed.
