Training objectives

The internship represents the heart of the professional preparation of the students of Degree Courses in the Health Professions and the fundamental training modality to develop professional skills, clinical / diagnostic reasoning and critical thinking. It is carried out in part in the place of assignment defined in the first year and partly in rotation in the various hospital laboratories pertaining to specific disciplinary scientific sectors of the profession. Students attend each workshop for a period defined by the program of the Director of educational activities. During this period the student is actively inserted in the context of the preparatory, diagnostic and research activities and instructed on the structural and functional organization of the laboratory. The student must also be able to fit into the organization of the different laboratories, identifying and respecting the roles and skills of all the professional figures that work there and collaborating with them to achieve the set goals.

Prerequisites

Having passed the examination of the professionalizing training activity carried out in the first year: Internship I.

Course programme

The internship takes place in university and health facilities affiliated with the NHS, mainly AOU and regional. The course foresees the continuation and deepening of the training activity activated in the first year of internal training which is associated with the frequency, in rotation, at the specific laboratories of:
• Hematology
• Pathological anatomy
• Pharmacy (antiblastic and galenic)
• Endocrinology
• Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna
The content of the course consists in the deepening of diagnostic and research technologies and in the identification at all levels of the operational processes of the Laboratory; in particular, knowing how to manage the pre-analytical phase, the analytical phase and the post-analytical phase in the various Operating Units. He will acquire specific diagnostic-laboratory-IT professional skills of: hematology, pathological anatomy, immunohematology and transfusion, pharmacology, microbiology and food serology. The student must also know the management and conservation of reagents and consumables, use personal protective equipment correctly and comply with rules and procedures concerning professional risk and waste disposal. Important aspect must know and respect the ethical code of ethics of the profession of Biomedical Laboratory Health Technician.

Didactic methods

Theoretical-practical activity of 525 hours, carried out within the laboratories with the support of personnel responsible for the various operational responsibilities of the specific professional profile of the University and hospital Biomedical Laboratory Technician. In each laboratory participating in the practical training, the teaching activity takes place according to a specific program defined by the Supervisor Tutor in agreement with the Tutor Guide.For each work phase it is possible to identify activities that the student can carry out side by side and then independently. After assessing the student's learning, it will be decided whether to proceed with the assessment test or possibly extend the stay by agreeing the recovery period with the Director of educational activities.

Learning assessment procedures

The final evaluation is subject to the achievement of the number of hours foreseen in the course of study, or 525 hours. The result is evaluated in thirtieths and is obtained by adding the score of:
• Arithmetic average obtained from the personal evaluation form prepared by the Tutor Guide of the internal training center and by the evaluation forms prepared by the Tutor Supervisors of the internship locations in rotation to certify the achievement of the training objectives. These cards analyze and evaluate other components such as behavioral aspects as well as the practical skills acquired. The final evaluation from 0-5 points will be shared with the student and will be included in the final vote only if the exam is passed.
• 1 hour written test to verify the learning of the activities related to the training course in rotation for the second year, the rules of the code of ethics and the basic rules for the management of the laboratory and the disposal of biological waste. Includes multiple choice quizzes which are assigned a value between 0 and 5 points.
• For all students who have achieved excellence in all parts of the assessments, the possibility of having the praise, 1 point, will be evaluated for the precision and ability to relate the topics on which the test is based.
