Training objectives

The internship represents the heart of the professional preparation of the students of Degree Courses in the Health Professions and the fundamental training modality to develop professional skills, clinical / diagnostic reasoning and critical thinking. The first year internship aims to standardize the technical / practical skills of the student coming from different backgrounds and with different degrees of laboratory preparation. The course includes the acquisition of knowledge concerning the organization and structure of the laboratory, the type of examinations performed, the management of personal safety and that of colleagues and the rules of the code of ethics. The main skills acquired consist in knowing how to perform the techniques used in the laboratories where the internship takes place, correctly supported by a Tutor Guide. The student is introduced to the acquisition of the general manual skills of the biomedical laboratory technician and to the knowledge of the diagnostic and research preparatory activities carried out in the Operating Units. The student must also be able to fit into the organization of the laboratory, identifying and respecting the roles and skills of all the professional figures who work there and collaborating with them to achieve the set goals. The internship takes advantage of the availability of laboratories in different locations of the University and in the University Hospital to acquire the specific work skills of the profession of Biomedical Laboratory Technician. These activities are configured as internal training.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics, chemistry and biology. Having successfully attended the Biochemistry Laboratory, first semester.

Course programme

The internship takes place in university and health facilities affiliated with SSN mainly AOU. In particular, the activity of the first year includes biomedical and biotechnological analyzes of biochemistry and molecular biology carried out in laboratories of the internal training assignment site. At the end of the activity of the first year the student must have acquired the main preparatory skills such as:
Use of glassware and disposable material in the laboratory
• The units of measurement of the concentration of a solute in solution
• Preparation of solutions and dilution of solutions
• Volumetric instruments for dilutions: precision glassware and disposable material, pipettes, micropipettes and automatic pipettors
• The equipment to prepare solutions and make dilutions: heating scales and magnetic stirrers
• The pH and the instruments for its measurement
• Type of refrigerators and freezers in a laboratory
• Proper safety management of refrigerators and freezers
• Basic hygiene standards in the laboratory: cleaning of hands, counter, surfaces in the event of accidental spills
• Types of centrifuges in a laboratory
• Proper use of centrifuges
• Notes on the classification of chemical reagents
• How to read the label of a chemical reagent

Didactic methods

Theoretical-practical activity of 400 hours, carried out in laboratories in direct collaboration with the staff responsible for the various operational responsibilities. For each work phase it is possible to identify activities that the student can carry out side by side and then independently. After assessing the student's learning, it will be decided whether to proceed with the assessment test or possibly extend the stay by agreeing the recovery period with the Director of educational activities.

Learning assessment procedures

The final evaluation is subject to the achievement of the number of hours foreseen in the course of the studies, or 400 hours. The result is evaluated in thirtieths and is obtained by adding the score of:
• Personal merit card prepared by the Tutor of the internship site to certify the achievement of the educational objectives. The card analyzes and evaluates, in addition to the practical skills acquired, other components such as behavioral aspects. The 0-5 point evaluation will be shared with the student and included in the final grade only if the exam is passed.
• Oral presentation that aims to expose the activity carried out in the laboratory attended in internal training. The test score ranges from 0 to 5 points, is based on lexical skills, on the aspects concerning the method and construction of the project shown, the precision of the processed data and the presentation and composition methods of the slides, as well as the synthesis capacity and of systemic organization of the work presented.
• For all students who have achieved excellence in all parts of the assessments, the possibility of having the praise, 1 point, will be evaluated for clarity, precision and the ability to relate the topics covered by the test.
