Training objectives

To acquire knowledeges and manual capacities for in vitro approaches to stem cells management before clinical use.

Prerequisites

Principals of immunology, histology, chemical and physical elements. laboratory basic experience is required

Course programme

Stem cell biology (different types of stem cells such as embryonic and adult somatic stem cells and hemopoietic stem cells), tissue origin of adult stem cells, plasticity, homing and differentiation processes. Molecular mechanisms about self-renewal, commitment, proliferation and plasticity of stem cells. Stem cells characterization and properties: immunophenotypical, functional end cytogenetical in vitro characterization of stem cells. Technologies for stem cells isolation expansion and cryopreservation (bioreactors, biobanks..). Stem cell therapy and relative products: reinfusion of DLI, ALDC, Treg, NK expansion, mesenchymal cells, immunotherapy, other stem cell derived products. Stem cells in preclinical models: different examples, governance and stem cell management. Stem cell therapy and guidelines for good manufacturing practice: GMP facility, cell factory. Quality management and assurance in stem cell production. Organization procedures and fundamentals for validation, processing, prevention of contaminations in GMP reality. Italian example of GMP facility and clinical applications. Main stem cells clinical settings in regenerative medicine: hemopoietic stem cell transplantation for autoimmune diseases and other diseases, myocardial infarction, GvHd, bone diseases, autoimmune pathologies, neurodegenerative diseases.etc..). Stem cell for tissue engineering: gene therapy for genetic disorders (skin, epithelial, bone, muscle disorders, acquired immunodeficiency), new technologies for iPS production and other cell products. New strategies and advanced material for tissue engineering: biomaterials, scaffolds, membrane technology, re-vascularization technologies, microchips, nano-technologies

Frontal lessons and laboratory (hematology/stem cells isolation)

Learning assessment procedures

Written examination in two hours: 30 questions (1 point for each positive answer and 0 for each wrong answer)
