Training objectives

GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY
Introduction to the scientific study of human behavior.
Learning of basic concepts related to the different mental faculties.
Introduction to clinical applications of psychological knowledge.
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The knowledge of main issues related to the psychological aspects of the different kinds of diseases in clinical contexts.
The acquisition of communicative and emotional skills in the relationship with the patient.
THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIPS
On completion of the course the student is expected to be able to:
-identify the features of the relationship between nurse, patient, family and community and choose the most suitable for the various healthcare settings.
-define the various levels of nurse/patient communication in relation to the setting
TRANSCULTURAL NURSING
-understand the phenomenon of migration and relative priority health problems.
-understand transcultural and intercultural nursing in relation to providing culturally determined solutions.
-embrace a minority health perspective to ensure equality of care in health organisations and services

Course programme

GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY
Theories and methods of research in general psychology. The brain and the bases of human behaviour. Perception. Memory . Language. Consciousness and Intelligence. Motivation end Emotions. Personality. From general psychology to clinical psychology
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Competences and intervention fields of Clinical Psychology. Clinical Method and its operative tools. Verbal and nonverbal communication.
The helping relationship with the patient. Patient identity as object and subject of medical care.
Nurse professional identity, abilities and interpersonal competences. Affective implications in the relationship with the patient.
The role of psychoanalysis
Somatic pain, Stress and Illness Behavior
Psychic pain: anxiety, psychic conflict, deficit and defenses. The origin of mental illness.
The inpatient. Models of doctor-patient relationship. “Difficult patients, “difficult relationships”. Adolescent patient, patterns of psychological distress in adolescence and management of suicidal crisis.
THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIPS
-aspects of the nurse/patient/family relationship and the community, narration. Intra-group relationship in healthcare team, management of emotions involved in the nurse/patient relationship
TRANSCULTURAL NURSING
Political economy of migration: reading of emigration, data analysis, priority health problems.
Organisational and managerial aspects involved in a the minority health perspective: from emergency services to services for all; transcultural and intercultural approach in healthcare assistance.
Intercultural Communication; mediation among different cultures; relations with minority cultures.
Organisation of group work: presentation of proposals concerning the theme of reception of immigrants or a plan regarding therapeutic education, or a plan for health education (patient suffering from an infectious disease, diabetes, cancer)
