Training objectives

THE MEDICAL SURGICAL EMERGENCIES
Provide the necessary background to understand the essential aspects of emergency surgery, in order to make a correct differential diagnosis of the clinical picture and be able to deal with the emergency medical and surgical treatment.
RESUSCITATION
The course aims at teaching the student to recognize life threatening clinical situations and acquire the basics of management of the critical patient in hospital wards, high tech wards and facilities external to the hospital.
RADIOPROTECTION
Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge of physics in ionizing radiation both electromagnetic and corpuscolate; radiation interaction with matter, in particular with living matter. Order of size, units of measure and detectors.
Applying knowledge and understanding: Knowledge of fundamental principles of radiation protection, and the effects of ionizing radiation on the living. Skills in protection of workers, patients and population from harmful effects of ionizing radiations. Knowledge of national and european regulation concernig radiation protection.
Making judgements: critical knowledge of professional operating conditions in presence of ionizing radiation, related to protection of workers, patients and population. Ability to detect and evaluate operational risk in presence of ionizing radiation.
Communication skills: Knowledge of safety signs. ability of relating with the competent authorities and the emergency staff consciously and with appropriate terminology.
Learning skills: knowledge of the access and consultation modalities to scientific data base and regulation in ionizing radiation protection field.
CLINICAL NURSING IN CRITICAL AREA + SEMINAR
Use the nursing process in solving the problems of the person in critical vital.
Recognize life-threatening clinical situations and acquire the knowledge needed for the management of critically ill patients in normal environments in hospital, in environments with high technology and in-extrahospital environment.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic in Radiation Physics and interaction with matter. Knowledge of eukaryote cell biology, expecially the cellular cycle. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology of organs and systems. Principles of medical pharmacology.
Application of the Nursing Process.

Course programme

THE MEDICAL SURGICAL EMERGENCIES
The importance of epidemiology, aetiology, risk factors and preventive measures, diagnostics, differential diagnosis and treatment of: disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, andrenal gland, breast and skin melanoma
Disorders of the larynx, trachea, digestive and urinary systems. Emergency abdominal and thoracic surgical treatment. Vascular, arterial and venal diseases requiring surgery
RESUSCITATION

Introduction to nursing care in emergencies: role of the nurse. Role of the nurse in emergencies in hospital setting and outside the hospital
Nursing assessment: triage in hospital and external settings. Nursing assessment process.
Field Evaluation
Management of the respiratory pathways in non traumatic events
Intravenous accesses and Intravenous medicines for emergencies
Shock. Dyspnoea. Chest pain. Alterations in consciousness, Abdominal pain- Advanced Vital support systems in the adult
Polytrauma. Management of the respiratory pathways in a traumatic event
Haemodynamic and respiratory monitoring

Artificial ventilation
RADIOPROTECTION
Radioactivity and Ionizing radiation. Atomic nucleus, Nuclear decay.
Interactions of ionizing radiation with matter. Measuring radioactivity. Order of size and units of measure.
Radiobiology basics.
Potential damages in livings. Deterministic and stochastic damages of ionizing radiations.. Fundamental principles of radiation protection.
National and european regulation concerning ionizing radiation protection.
CLINICAL NURSING IN CRITICAL AREA + SEMINAR
Organizational and legislative aspects of the emergency medical service in Italy, in intra and in extra-hospital: the role of the nurse in the emergency 118 system in triage.
Nursing care responsibilities of the person with impairment of vital functions, use of tools and procedures for the control of the airways.
Primary Survey A-B-C-D-E and Secondary Survey
Responsibility of nursing care and peculiarities of the person subjected to invasive ventilatory treatment in the context of hospital care, use of the main monitors: cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological pain.
Care of the patient with maxillofacial trauma.
Nursing Skills in disaster medicine
Role of intensive care nurse towards brain death and organ transplantation

THE MEDICAL SURGICAL EMERGENCIES
Oral exam: 1-2 questions on the topics covered; variable duration between 15-30 minutes; the evaluation criteria are the clarity, the mastery of an examination subject, and the ability to transfer content in clinical practice.
RESUSCITATION
Multiple choice quizzes with 28 question (4 replies). 0 points for no date answer, + 1 for right answer, -1 for wrong answer; 2 open questions (short text) from 0 to 2 points. Test duration 1 hour
RADIOPROTECTION
The exam will be held by means of a multiple choice test, with an allocated time of 45 minutes. The questions will be thirty-two, with four answers proposed, of wich only one is exact. The questions pertain to the topics carried out during the lectures. The evaluation criteria are: plus 1 point (+1) for each single correct answer; minus half point (-0,5) for each single wrong answer; no point (0) for each single missing answer.
A final score of "31" points or more implies the evaluation "cum laude". These evaluation criteria are reported in the test sheet along with the compilation instructions.
CLINICAL NURSING IN CRITICAL AREA + SEMINAR:
multiple choice test, 30 questions, four answers, one correct one. Time: 40 minutes.
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TESTS.
