Training objectives

MODULE I
The course will provide students with the skills necessary for understanding contemporary society. Specifically addressed are the major themes of sociology, for example, the family, socialization, education, the labor market, organizations, deviance. To assist in an interaction and discussion in classroom lectures that are provided for both group work.
MODULE II
The course unit aims at providing theoretical and methodological tools useful to introduce students to research in psychology (with particular reference to cognitive psychology) and for understanding its main results.
IMODULE III
The aim of the module is that of presenting the influence that different contextual elements (social, environmental, familiar…) can have on the person in need but also on the representation that others (in particular, the professionals who work with those individuals) have about them.
The module will provide theorical elements that are important to incorporate while planning the intervention, and examples of situations in which the Professional Educator may operate.
In particular, at the end of the course students should
a) be more aware of the complex relation between social, environmental and individual factors in the management of the person with needs
b) be more aware of the ethical aspects that should be taken into account when designing a rehabilitation/assistential intervention;
c) have improved their skills in searching/finding relevant materials and integrate them into a written presentation.

Course programme

MODULE I
It is expected to address the following issues:
Modern societies in the West. Elementary forms of interaction
Organized groups: associations and organizations
Values, norms and institutions. Identity and socialization. Stratification and social classes
Deviance and crime. Religion. The gender differences. Races, ethnic groups and nations. Family and marriage. Education and instruction. The work
MODULE II
Main topics of cognitive psychology. The course surveys areas such as perception, attention, consciousness, memory, learning, language, reasoning. Some basic notions of social psychology
MODULE III
Ethical issues in care and rehabilitation, with particular emphasis to consent and confidentiality;
The influence of contextual factors (social, cultural, environmental) on the intervention: the case of deafness, substance abuse and aging;
The individual as central element to the intervention: importance of motivation and awareness;
The bio-psycho-social model: precipitating, predisposing, protective and perpetuating factors;
Sport and physical activity to promote inclusion: the case of baskin.

Didactic methods

Lectures, with use of audiovisual material. Teamwork.
MODULE II
Main issues of the course units will be presented in face-to-face lessons which will make use of PowerPoint presentations.
MODULE III
The course will be organised into lectures (also with the support of audiovisual materials), presentation and class discussion of interesting cases. Expert professionals will be invited to discuss with the students.

Learning assessment procedures

MODULE I
Written exam lasting 1 hour. Students are expected to briefly reply to 3 questions, 5 multiple choice questions (each offering 4 responses) and develop a short assay on a topic discussed in class.
MODULE II
Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of the course topics in the final exam, which will include a multiple-choice test and (possibly) an oral test (only for students who pass the written test).
MODULE III
Students will have to write a brief essay (around 1500-2000 words) on a topic chosen from a list provided by the lecturer.
This activity requires students to:
- find the relevant materials (e.g., scientific paper, but also articles on newspapers, TV series, novel, news, song…);
- describe the content, highlighting why the topic is relevant for the Professional Educator.
Students are advised to check with the lecturer the appropriateness of the materials they have selected.
General assessment criteria
The essay should be well articulated, which will allow
- the assessment of the level of understanding of the topic, also in connection with the issues covered during the lectures;
- the development of critical thinking and argumentative skills.
The final evaluation will be based also on communicative skills and on the appropriateness of the linguistic form.
