Training objectives

RADIOBIOLOGY
• Basic principles and primary effects of the interactions between ionizing radiation and living matter.
RADIOPROTECTION
• Main local and national regulations in the field of radiation protection for patients, operators and the population.
RADIOFARMACEUTICALS FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THERAPY
• Production and quality control of radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. These aspects are mainly aimed at achieving a global vision of the production process of radiopharmaceuticals for clinical and experimental nuclear medical use; a further objective concerns the knowledge of the environments and instrumentation dedicated to clinical and experimental radiopharmaceutical production; a further objective is represented by the knowledge of the current legislation in the radiopharmaceutical field.

The main skills (i.e. the ability to apply the knowledge acquired) will be represented by knowing and understanding: (a) the dynamics of the preparation and quality control processes of radiopharmaceuticals for clinical and experimental use; (b) their application with a correct methodological approach inspired by the principles of radiobiology and radiation protection.

Prerequisites

Basics of: Biology; Physics; General and Inorganic Chemistry; Organic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry.

Course programme

Regulatory aspects

Didactic methods

48 hours of lessons delivered in blended mode (recorded lessons, online or face-to-face focus groups) with the use of self-produced material (slides and / or videos)

Learning assessment procedures

The objective of the exam is to verify the level of achievement of the previously indicated training objectives.
The exam consists of a written quiz test (33 multiple choice quizzes, 4 answers, one exact) on all the topics covered in the course and divided as follows: 6 Radiobiology questions; 11 Radioprotection questions and 16 Radiopharmaceuticals questions.
The test aims to assess the student's knowledge and understanding of the topics covered. The estimated time for the test is 40 minutes. The evaluation criteria for the questions is as follows: +1 point for each correct answer, 0 points for each wrong or not given answer. To pass the exam it is necessary to acquire a minimum overall score of 18 out of 30. A score higher than 30 allows the achievement of “laude”.
