Training objectives

General and Inorganic Chemistry is the first course in Chemistry and deals with the fundamentals of atomic structure, the periodic table, and the reactivity of the main inorganic compounds.
The final aim of this course is to provide students with the basic concepts and instruments for a full comprehension of the contents of Organic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry.
The primary acquired knowledge will be on atomic structure, arrangement of the elements in the periodic table, periodic properties, relationship between chemical reactivity and groups/valence electronic configurations, chemical bonding, type of reactions and their balancing, properties of gaseous and liquid compounds/mixtures, properties of solutions and their concentrations, dilution, chemical equilibrium, acid-base equilibria.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to carry out experiments at the macroscopic level, think at a microscopic level, and translate observed results into a symbolic language. In particular, they will be able to perform basic laboratory operations.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics and physics is required: proportions, equations, skills in the graphic description of simple mathematical functions, logarithms, exponential calculus, and units of measure. There are no formal prerequisites.

Course programme

The course consists of 48 hours of lessons.

The subjects of the lessons will be:

1) Atoms and elements; composition of matter; periodic table of the elements and periodic properties; atomic and molecular weights; mole (9 hrs)
2) Chemical bond. Main classes of compounds (9 hrs)
3) Chemical reactions. RedOx. Stoichiometry. (5 hrs)
4) Basics of thermochemistry. States of matter. Gas laws. Liquids and solids. Solutions. Colligative properties (9 hrs)
5) Chemical equilibrium. Acids and bases: pH, hydrolysis, buffered solutions (12 hrs)
6) Principles of electrochemistry (3 hrs)

Didactic methods

The course consists of 48 hours of lectures about all the program's topics. Numerical exercises will be performed in order to favor understanding.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is written. The maximum time is 1 hour.
The test consists of multiple-choice questions, either of theoretical or numerical character. The exam consists of multiple choice questions regarding the program's topics. It may involve theoretical notions and numerical exercises, for a total score of 33 points. There is no penalty for wrong or not given answers. The Student is allowed to use the periodic table, the calculator, and a list of formulae.
The mark will be communicated to the Student at the institutional email address. In case of positive evaluation, the Student shall access the personal webpage (@ studiare.unife.it) and proceed with acceptance/decline of the mark.
