Biomaterials and biocompatible synthetic materials:
Students will be able to know the various types of materials of biomedical interest, to distinguish them on the basis of the main properties and application purposes.

Pharmaceutical Technology:
The student will be able to apply the scientific principles relative to the design, production and quality control of conventional and nanotechnological pharmaceutical formulations. In addition the student will be able to evaluate the drawbacks associated to production and use of the studied pharmaceutical forms.

Biomaterials and biocompatible synthetic materials:
Definition and classification of biomaterials: metals and their alloys, ceramics, thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, composites, biodegradable and bioactive materials.
Introduction to the structure of solids.
Properties of materials of biomedical interest: mechanical, thermal and surface properties.
Definition of polymer, average molecular weight, polydispersity, copolymers. Peculiarities of solid state polymers. Polymers of biomedical interest: polyurethanes, silicones, fluoropolymers, polyacrylates, biodegradable and bioabsorbable polymers. Natural polymers: proteins and polysaccharides. Semi-synthetic polymers.
The hydrogels. The composites.
Methods of transformation of thermoplastic and thermosetting materials. Preparation of membranes, sponges. Surface modification methods. 3D printing.
Main methods of characterization of materials of biomedical interest.

Learning assessment procedures

The actual acquisition of knowledge and skills provided by the course will be ascertained by a written evaluation. The objective of the examination is to verify the level of achievement of the previously indicated educational objectives. By the test the ability to connect and compare different aspects treated during the course will be evaluated.
The test consists of 16 multiple choice questions (a-d). A score of 1 point each. No penalties are given to unanswered questions or wrong answers.
