Training objectives

The achievement of a high level of competence in the Spanish language (C1/C2), increasing the quantity and quality of the expressive resources in both written and oral fields. Provide students with basic knowledge of theory and practice of translation, particularly with respect to the various methodological approaches relating to this area. Deepen the study and the practice of literary translation from Spanish into Italian language. At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meaning. He/She can express ideas fluently and spontaneously. He/She can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. He/She can produce clear, well-structured and detailed texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices. He/She will be able to translate Spanish texts into Italian and to identify the various translator’s choices and decisions.

Prerequisites

B2 level of Spanish. Students must have passed the B2 Spanish level test at the beginning of the course of Lingua spagnola (1st module, 1st semester) or the exam of Lingua spagnola (1st module, 1st semester).

Course programme

The course of “Lingua spagnola: traduzione” consists of two semestral modules:
A) “Theory and Practice of Translation”;
B) “The literary Translation from Spanish into Italian”.

The first section (10 hours), "Theory and practice of translation", provides outlines of the history of translation (focusing on the Hispanic context) and involves the analysis of the main theoretical contributions about translation. The second section (20 hours) will focus on the different translation techniques and will analyze multiple examples of literary translation from Spanish into Italian, examining various contemporary Spanish novels and their Italian versions.

Didactic methods

The course includes presential lectures with student participation and exercises. The first part (10 hours) will be dedicated to the analysis of the main theories in the field of translation and to their practical application; in the second part of the course (20 hours) we will delve into the strategies used in literary translation and examine various contemporary Spanish works and their Italian versions.

Learning assessment procedures

The modality of examination is different for attending and non-attending students.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS will take the exam (written+oral) in one of the official date. The written exam consists of various open questions (between 4 and 6) that will cover ALL the texts listed in the bibliography. The duration of the written test will be two hours. The student will have access to the oral part only if he/she obtains a sufficient mark in the written test, answering correctly to at least the 60% of the questions. The oral part will assess the student’s language skills and will focus on the issues raised in the written test and on further topics. Both tests —written and oral—will be held in Spanish.

For ATTENDING STUDENTS, the final exam consists of a translation of one of the stories in the anthology provided by the teacher (unpublished in Italy). The translation will be followed by a comment that explains precisely the translation choices made by the student, making references also to the theoretical issues deepened during the classes. The written work must be sent to the teacher at least one week before the final oral exam. During the oral part, the student should be able to justify the translation choices he/she made in his/her project.
