Training objectives

The achievement of a high level of competence in the Spanish language (C1/C2), increasing the quantity and quality of the expressive resources in both written and oral fields. Provide students with knowledge of Spanish linguistic varieties. At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meaning. He/She can express ideas fluently and spontaneously. He/She can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. He/She can produce clear, well-structured and detailed texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices. He/She knows the different varieties of Spanish language.

Prerequisites

B2 level of Spanish. Linguistic proficiency will be assessed by a Spanish level test at the beginning of the course. The students that start the course after the beginning of the lessons must contact the teacher in order to take this test.

Course programme

This is the course for the students of the first year of the Master Degree in “Lingue e Letterature Straniere” (both curricula) and it consists of two semestral parts:
A) a theoretical part, that focuses on the analysis of Spanish diatopic, diastratic, diacronic and diaphasic varieties;
B) a practical part (“lettorato”) with lecturers, held by mother-tongue teachers, designed to consolidate the students’ oral and written skills through linguistic exercises.

The theoretical part aims at introducing the study of linguistic variation in the Spanish language, focusing on crucial topics such as the dimensions of variation (diacronic, diaphasic, diatopic, diachronic), linguistic norm, lenguage and dialect, etc. The lectures of the practical part ("lettorato"), held by mother-tongue teachers, are designed to strengthen the students’ oral and written skills through the reading and discussion (written and oral) of texts about current issues.

Didactic methods

The course includes presential lectures with student participation and exercises. The theoretical part (30 hours), held by the teacher, will be dedicated to Spanish varieties. The lessons of the practical part (12 hours), held by mother-tongue teachers, will deepen the reading and understanding of texts, oral and written expression.

More information and teaching materials will be upload in Google Classroom (code: ltft4nv). Further materials for non-attending students will be provided in the Classroom.

Learning assessment procedures

The final exam consists of a written exam, open to attending and non-attending students. It consists of two parts:
- A written composition (at least 500 words) on a topic studied during the practical part;
- Some open questions (between 5 and 8) about the theoretical part.
The use of the vocabulary is not allowed. The duration of the test will be two hours and 30 minutes. The test will reach the sufficiency (18/30) if the student shows at least a sufficient linguistic and lexical competence in written composition (the composition must respect the subject required; the morphological and spelling correction, the correct use of grammatical and the consistency and cohesion of the text will be evaluated in this part), if he/she answers correctly to at least 60% of the questions about the theoric part. The mark of this written test will be averaged with the final exam of the “Didattica della Lingua Spagnola” and “Lingua Spagnola: traduzione” (according to the chosen curriculum) course in the second semester.
