Training objectives

Along with general development of linguistic skills, especially speaking and writing, it is hoped to enhance students’ cultural awareness and knowledge of English-speaking areas of the world, and to broaden students’ general linguistic awareness. Along with specific cultural information, the course hopes to impart general ideas and concepts related to sociolinguistics, cultural anthropology and critical assessments of issues raised by globalisation.

Prerequisites

Students should be in possession of a first degree and have a competence in English of a level of at least B2-C1

Course programme

language development (all four skills) at C1 level with particular emphasis on vocabulary, proverbs etc.;
translation skills and theoretical awareness;
cultural knowledge and understanding;
confidence with internet/computer resources;
Aspects of general linguistics (verb tense and aspect; lexis and idiomatic language)and pragmatics (especially conversationa analysis); Searle, Grice etc.

Didactic methods

Various activities aimed at developing language skills; use of the textbook (Proficiency Masterclass, OUP), dvds and videos etc;
Specific readings for culture and translation theory and practice.

Learning assessment procedures

Written 'mid term' examination (essay) on culture in January 2015;
Written examination (language and culture) June 2015 (3 hours, 4 hours for those yet to pass the 'mid term' exam);
Listening test (2 texts for listening comprehension);
Final oral examination. Candidates must pass both written papers and the listening test before attempting the oral examination.
