Training objectives

Along with general development of linguistic skills, especially speaking and writing, it is hoped to enhance students’ cultural awareness and knowledge of English-speaking areas of the world, and to broaden students’ general linguistic awareness. The level of the course is C2. Analysis of complex grammar and development of vocabulary (use of metaphor, idioms etc.). Along with cultural knowledge of Great Britain and the English-speaking world, the course hopes to impart general ideas and concepts related to sociolinguistics, cultural anthropology and critical assessments of issues raised by globalisation.

Prerequisites

Students should follow the second year course after successfully completing the first year.

Level: from C1 onwards (CEFR)

Course programme

Language development (all four skills).
Course level: C2.

Analysis of texts in English with cultural themes.

Cultural knowledge and understanding of Great Britain and other English-speaking areas; sociolinguistics; pragmatics; dicourse analysis; English as a lingua franca.

Didactic methods

Language work: (see textbook: Proficiency Masterclass and vocabulary textbooks).

Lessons will consist of group work and mini presentations in addition to traditional lectures. Exercises for listening and conversation practice.


Additional readings in culture, and traditional lectures, with group work as well. Use of DVDs and videos etc.

Learning assessment procedures

Mid-term examination in December/January: essay questions on culture topics.

Final exam: 1 text for comprehension, 2 essays (1 on GB culture, the other on general current affairs) and 2 grammar/vocabulary instruments.

Listening test (2 instruments).

Oral examination: questions on language, GB/US culture and sociolinguistics etc.
