To broaden the knowledge of American literary history, to develop the ability to do close readings, and to increase students’ analytical and critical skills through an in-depth examination of American literature and literary criticism.

Prerequisites

Advanced knowledge of the English language (C1).

Course programme

"Freedom Dreams: Speculative Fiction and American Literature."
The course, which will be taught in English, will require the active in-class participation of students in discussing the texts and the critical essays. We will focus on 19th- and early 20th-century works of speculative fiction by Edward Bellamy and Lillian B. Horace, examining them in their literary historical context. Through close readings of the texts, we will foreground the politics of representation of gender, ethnicity, and class deploying the critical methodologies of Ethnic and Women's Studies.
