Training objectives

The course will consist of a core section (6 hours, mandatory for all students) and two seminars/workshops on literature teaching (12 hours each) to be chosen among How to Teach English Literature, French Literature, German Literature, or Spanish Literature, for a total of 30 hours.

Learning objectives:
¿ Examine the current state of literature teaching in Italian Schools: where, when, how; the indications of the Ministry of Education;
¿ Apply different strategies of textual analysis;
¿ Examine and apply diverse teaching methods and approaches; particular attention will be paid to literary genres theories, as well as interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives;
¿ Examine and evaluate textbooks;
¿ Create materials and activities that are appropriate to different learning styles as well as students with special needs;
¿ Learn to plan lessons or learning units based on a variety of teaching approaches;
¿ Examine the current curriculum of literature teaching in English in secondary schools, with a view to opening it up to the new literatures in a postcolonial perspective.

Prerequisites

Advanced knowledge of the language (B2+ or C1) is required. Course attendance is strongly recommended.

Course programme

The course will consist of a core part (6 hours, mandatory for all students) and two seminars on literature teaching (12 hours each) to be chosen among English Literature, French Literature, Spanish Literature, or German Literature, for a total of 30 hours.
Starting from an examination of the current state of literature teaching in secondary schools, this course will explore a variety of teaching methods and approaches. Students will be required to examine and produce materials and activities based on the different approaches explored. The course will also investigate and test strategies aimed at students’ involvement and inclusive didactics in the field of literature teaching.

Didactic methods

A mixture of lectures, workshops, seminars, site visits, class debates, research challenges, onsite observations. The lessons will have a practical approach aimed at developing skills and sharing good practices in the field of lesson planning as well as teaching. Students will be required to analyse, plan, share teaching practices, and teach/simulate a lesson in context, as well as observe real class interaction.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will consist of 2 parts:
1. A written part, consisting in ONE lesson plan or ONE lesson for EACH of the two seminars - further details to be agreed with individual seminar instructors of:
- teaching French Literature
- teaching EnglishLiterature
- teaching SpanishLiterature
- teaching German Literature
Students are required to discuss in advance the topic of their lesson plans/lessons with the instructors. The lesson plans / lesson will be either in Italian or in the language of the seminar. Both tasks are due at least one week before the exam.

2. An oral discussion, at the time of the exam, in which students will have to critically discuss and defend their didactic choices, as well as demonstrate their knowledge about the general part of the course.
Students who are unable to attend the course are required to contact the teacher.
