Training objectives

The aim of the course is to improve the knowledge of Greek ancient language and texts of ancient authors.Students have to know how to translate passages of texts chosen and how to analyze them starting from text constitution.

Prerequisites

Greek ancient language (first level).Although it is useful as a second course, may also attend those who never have taken the course in previous years.

Course programme

Introduction to literary genres of ancient Greece: dialects, metres, style, performance. The text constitution and history of tradition of texts.
The interpretation of a text: The ancient commentaries (scholia) and the modern critical tradition.

Didactic methods

1. verification of students' knowledge;
2. introductory lessons to the study of an ancient literature;
3. lessons of historical grammar;
4. translation exercises;

Learning assessment procedures

Ongoing oral questions during lessons and short written translations ; Final oral exam with a preliminary examination of knowledge of the language and translation skills and literary history questions.The exam program annually provides some minor variations
