Training objectives

The course intends to introduce 1) the basic subjects concerning the development of Psychology as a science, with particular reference to methodological and content aspects in the research of psychological processes, 2) the historical grounding, essential concepts and methodologies of scientific psychology, through the learning of main experimental studies.
Knowledge: acquisition of the concepts of psychology as a science of human mind and behavior; main psychology schools; experimental method applied to psychological research; main research fields of experimental psychology.
Abilities (capability of applying acquired knowledge):
analyzing some known psychology experiments with regard to specific research hypotheses; deeply analyzing specific mental or behavioral processes.
Soft skills: the ability to understand whether a study is based on a robust and rigorous experimental methodology, the ability to analyze specific psychological aspects, and the ability to write a short report on specific mental or behavioral processes, among those learned during the course

Course programme

This course involves 30 hours of teacher up front classes. The course contents are the following: Elements of History of Psychology; Research methods in Psychology; Sensation and Perception; Attention; Learning; Systems and Processes of Memory and Representation of Knowledge; Language and Communication; Thinking, Reasoning, Problem Solving, Judgment and Decision Making; Intelligence. The course also includes classroom activities to be carried out individually or in small groups. These activities may replace, in whole or in part, the final written exam. The modalities and content of these activities will be clarified during the course.

Didactic methods

The course is organized as follows:
teacher up front lessons and discussion on course subjects in classroom. In-depth meetings and discussion of classroom activities, which will be clarified during the course.

Learning assessment procedures

The objective of the examination test is to verify the level of achievement of the training objectives indicated above.
The exam is written and includes 31 multiple-choice or true/false questions. The exam takes place in the computer room, and will be divided into shifts in which a small group of students/students can participate at a time. To pass the test you must acquire at least 18/31. It is possible to request oral integration if you pass the written test. The time allowed for the test is 45 minutes.
