Training objectives


Training objectives of the course are to deepen the knowledge of the students concerning theoretical and methodological aspects of language. Students will acquire knowledge of the methodological distinctions between diachrony and synchrony. At the synchronic level, students will broaden the knowledge of syntactic principles, and theoretical aspects of semantics and pragmatics. This advanced knowledge in linguistics will allow students to develop quite independently a research in Italian, in different languages and in textual analyses with appropriate tools.

Prerequisites

fundamentals aspects of linguistic theory are presupposed (a basic linguistic course).

Course programme

The organization of the course is in two parts. Part I discusses a range of basic notions that underlie virtually all discussions of meaning within linguistics. Part 2 introduces the core areas of pragmatic and highlights the relation between meaning and context. Grammatical analyses concerning speech acts, deixis and information structure are discussed. The grammatical categories relevant to the analyses, such as mood, inflectional properties, etc.

Didactic methods

Lectures in-class student participation and a final written presentation in Italian or in English (no more than 10.000 characters) on a theme discussed in class. Foreign students are kindly urged to attend the lessons.
