Training objectives

Aim of the course is to enable the access of knowledge about artistic activities affecting Italian and Rome as main center of the cultural scene across 16th and 17th century. The purpose is to increase and to develop the ability of rebuilt the historical background behind the contemporary ideas about art history, related to the European geography and the interactions and movements of artists and their works of art. The course will train expert in cultural heritage studies, curatorial studies and art historical projects.

Course programme

GEORGE DE LA TOUR AND THE EUROPE OF LIGHT

The contents of the course will investigate the amount of studies and recent exhibitions that underlined Geroge de La Tour's remarkable works in the context of the European art. Lessons will focus on his work linked to the world developed as a result of his travels and highlighting the genuine possibility for works of art and ideas to circulate, contributing to the creation and popularization of many great works of art characterized by that modem and dramatic luminism, a feature not only of Italian art but also French and Flemish art.
A second group of lessons will deepen the research around the quite new field of the birth of the artistic market and to the artist’s professional working activity. The fascination of naturalism, everyday life , lust and violence animating the street as well as ancient the roman ruins and the magnificent of the modern city with the whole of its parties along the year, impresses mainly foreign artists and bringing them to desire working in Rome. During the course will be examined through case studies the strategies and socio-cultural dynamics affecting the political and economic life strictly linked to the artistic expressions of the period.

Front lessons with projections of slides and powerpoint. Seminars of important international scholars.
Workshops about exhibitions planning and cultural itineraries

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination.
Four question about italian Art History of the 16th and 17th century, regarding specific aspects of artists and works of art.
The examination will last 20 minutes.
