Training objectives

The aim of the course is to introduce 1) the characteristics of experimental research in psychology and 2) the psychological processes and cognitive strategies underlying effective and functional communication in different contexts. By the end of the course, students should be able to have
conceptual tools to understand the complexity of the psychological processes involved in communication and to analyse specific and different communication contexts; to analyse and understand some well-known phenomena and studies in communication psychology from the point of view of experimental research, in relation to specific research hypotheses; to analyse current phenomena, from the point of view of communication.

Course programme

The course comprises 30 hours of face-to-face teaching. The face-to-face teaching will cover the main topics contained in the chapters of the textbook, which must be studied in order to pass the examination. Special attention will be paid to the following topics: basic concepts of communication; understanding and producing messages; non-verbal communication; visual codes and verbal codes; communication in health care; risk communication. A number of topics will also be explained that are not in the textbook, but are important for understanding the experiments explained in the textbook and for understanding how psychology has dealt with important topics such as: language development (typical and atypical) and bilingualism.
The course also includes classroom activities to be carried out individually, or in small groups. These activities will be optional, but will be assessed for the final examination. The modalities and content of these activities will be clarified during the introductory lesson.

Didactic methods

The course is organised as follows
face-to-face lectures, in the classroom, on the topics of the course; video lectures published in the classroom, which can be used by non-attending students and to revise for the exam.

Learning assessment procedures

The objective of the examination test is to verify the level of achievement of the training objectives indicated above.
The exam is written and includes 31 multiple-choice or true/false questions. The exam takes place in the computer room, and will be divided into shifts in which a small group of students/students can participate at a time. To pass the test you must acquire at least 18/31. It is possible to request oral integration if you pass the written test. The time allowed for the test is 30 minutes.
