Training objectives

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The intention of the course is to provide a general knowledge of the subject from Aby Warburg (1866-1929) to Ernst H. Gombrich (1909-2001) and a guideline for the understanding of religious and secular subjects through a comparison of texts and images. The educational goal is to teach an understanding of the eventual relationships between sources and images, of their chronological and stylistic ambient and the capacity to describe and identify subjects through a correct use of the methodology.

Course programme

General knowledge of the subject: Warburg, Panofsky and Gombrich.



The course will include trips to museums in Ferrara, Bologna, Florence..

Didactic methods

TEACHING METHODS

1. Teacher-led lessons in class and in museums.
2. Reading of texts.
3. Analysis and interpretation of images.

Learning assessment procedures

FINAL TEST

The final test will consist of an oral exam which will assess the knowledge and understanding of the subjects discussed during the course and of the reference texts. Critical skills and the ability to discuss the problems will be assessed, and the examinees must demonstrate that they have acquired a method for the correct interpretation of the images.
