Training objectives
- The course of Cultural Anthropology and Communication aims to introduce firstly qualitative research in anthropology and secondly anthropological theories and interpretations in studying media and in employing them to produce ethnographic research.
Acquired knowledge will be: analytical tools to understand the complexity of communication processes from an anthropological point of view; the analysis of specific and different communicative environments.
The main skills (ie the ability to apply the knowledge acquired) will be: analyze, from the perspective of ethnographic research, some well-known theories in the field of anthropology of communication; develop an experimental research study for a specific environment, in communication as well. Course programme
- The 60-hour course is divided between lectures, exercise and presentations of ethnographic research discussed with students.
The contents of the course are the following:
Brief history, theory and method of cultural anthropology: (4 hours);
Urban Anthropology (6 hours);
Political Anthropology (2 hours);
Anthropology of religion (2 hours);
Anthropology of migration (2 hours);
Anthropology of language (2 hours);
Economic anthropology (2 hours);
Anthropology of education (2 hours);
Anthropology of communication (4 hours);
Field research (6 hours).
Presentation of ethnographic research (15 hours)
Indoors and outdoors exercises (15 hours) Didactic methods
- The course is organized as follows:
Lectures (30 hours)
Presentation of field research through audiovisual materials (15 hours)
Discussion (indoors and outdoors exercises, 15 hours) Learning assessment procedures
- The aim of the examination is to test the achievement of the previously mentioned educational goals. The exam is oral, but a written paper is required before the oral examination.
The exam is written: open questions about the topics addressed in lessons and in textbooks. Reference texts
