Training objectives

The mechanical engineer, involved in design, plant maintenance, management and quality control, is strongly connected to the materials world. This course aims at giving the basic knowledges on metals science, on transformation from liquid to solid state, on reinforcement mechanisms, on thermal treatments and on the effect of cold and hot plastic deformations. With this metallurgical knowledge the student will be able to interpretate relationships between microstructure and mechanical properties of metallic alloys, to carry on metallographic analyses, to evaluate the influence of processing and technological treatments, of defects, for choosing and applying metallic materials in the engineering field, in order to guarantee the best exercise behaviour.

Prerequisites

Students must have studied the first year course “Fundamental of Chemistry and Materials” and must have the base knowledge of physic, inorganic chemistry and material science.

Course programme

The metallic state. Metal alloys: substitutional and interstitial solid solutions.
Defects of the crystalline structures. Dislocationd and plastic deformation.

Introduction to cast iron: classification, effect of alloying elements on microstructures and properties, mechanical properties, applications, metallographic microstructures.

Didactic methods

During the AA 2020/21 the course have been carried out by theoretical lessons by telematic streaming, due to Covid-19 problems. Lessons have been recorded.
During the AA 2021/22 the course will be held in the presence or mixed mode.

The didactic tutor, by telematic lessons, will shown the technical equipment used in the metallurgical laboratory, describing the metallographic preparation of metallic specimens. Microstructural structures of plain carbon steel and cast irons have been shown and interpretated.

Learning assessment procedures

The oral examination have the aim of evaluating the student ability to understand the relationship between the mechanical behaviour of metallic materials, the metallurgical processes and the microstructures.
