Training objectives

The object of the course is to analyse complex mechanical design problems and numerically solve linear and non-linear problems.

Prerequisites

Mechanical Design I

Course programme

1) The fundamental concepts of continuum mechanics necessary for studying the mechanical behaviour of solids; fundamental concepts of stress and strain; methods for stress and strain evaluation (20 hours);

2) tensile curve; elementary plasticity; autofrettage; low cycle fatigue; design of a Conrads; design of a solution of linear and non-linear equations (20 hours)

3)statically indeterminate problems (6 hours)

4)computer lab (numerical integration of partial differiential equations and linear and non-linear equations by means of commercial software; use of worksheets made by students)(20 hours)

Didactic methods

The course is organized as follows:
lectures on all topics of the course and
classroom exercises on previously treated arguments.
Furthermore, during the course will be made a design of a power transmission. The final report will be request at the oral session.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is divided into two parts: written and oral.
The written examination lasts 2 hours and includes exercises of arguments considered during the course and a question (to answer in writing) on a topic of the course.
Who will score at least 18 points will be permitted to perform oral session.
In the oral session it will be evaluated the ability of student to link and compare different aspects considered during the course.
If the oral examination is sufficient, the final score will take into account the previous score and of the activities carried out in the computer lab.
