Training objectives

The main objective of the course is to provide skills regarding the design with polymeric materials, transformation technologies and the main classes of polymers.

Prerequisites

Polymeric Materials course

Course programme

Advantages and disadvantages of plastics. Solid state properties of plastics. Components obtained by injection molding: uniform, thin thicknesses. Failure. Reinforcement with ribs. Assembly methods. Welding: hot tool, spin welding, ultrasonic, vibrational, with lost conductors. Elastic joints. Transformation technologies: extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, rotational molding, filming, 3D printing. Estimation of cooling time in the mold for injection molded components. Estimation of shrinkages, cooling cycle. Additives. Main plastic materials: polyolefins, styrenics, polyvinyl chloride. Polyamides, polyesters, polyacetal, polycarbonate, acrylics. High performance polymers. Elastomers and foams, polyurethanes. Tutorial on the use of software for the simulation of injection molding (Moldflow).

Didactic methods

Lectures, laboratory lessons and company visit. Use of Moldflow software for injection molding simulation.

Learning assessment procedures
