Training objectives

Fluid power is a multidisciplinary subject integrating elements of mechanics, fluid-dynamics and control systems. Furthermore, fluid power is one of the basic technologies for power transmission and it is applied to countless fields, from automotive to earth-moving, agricultural and lifting or special machines, from aerospace to naval applications, to fixed applications such as automatic manufacturing machines.
The objective of the course is to provide the competence in the architectures and operating principles of hydraulic systems, providing both the base knowledge of hydraulic components and the design principles for hydraulic control architectures (circuits). This expertise is aimed at providing the necessary competence to break into the production world, especially in the above mentioned fields.

Prerequisites

To undertake the course it is highly recommended to have attended and gained understanding of the topics covered in the courses of "Fisica Tecnica" and "Macchine".

Course programme

The topics covered in the classroom lectures are the following:
- Introduction to fluid power; Main parameters for hydraulic power transmission; Equations and basic principles of fluid power; Nomenclature and symbols.
- Introduction to basic components; Volumetric components (pumps and motors, cylinders); Valves.
- Supply groups; Single/multiple pump groups; Pressure and flow control valves.
- Rotational (hydraulic motors) and linear (cylinders) actuation systems; Braking circuits; Overcentre valves.
- Load sensing circuits; Multiple actuators; Flow sharing architectures.
- Hydrostatic transmissions (closed circuit).
- Flow forces; Axial and radial balance of spool valves.
- Hydraulic fluids; Hydraulic piping; Filtration.
- Modelling hydraulic components and systems; Power Port method; Introduction to the Amesim simulation environment.

Didactic methods

The course is composed of 60 hours of classroom teaching, split between lectures and practical exercises.

Subject to availability, lectures could be complemented by a 2-hour seminar by an industry professional.

Learning assessment procedures

The final test is an oral exam to verify the level of achievement of the above mentioned educational objectives.
