Training objectives

The course is concerned about basic aspects of polymeric materials

Prerequisites

Basic chemistry and mechanics of materials

Course programme

General properties of plastics.
Chemical bonds. Morphology. Configuration and conformation. Molecular weight. Classification. Thermoplastics and thermosets. Transition temperatures: glass transition, melting, crystallization. Measurement.
Viscoelasticity and linear viscoelasticity. Isocronous curves. Creep compliance and relaxation modulus. Models with springs and dashpots. Time-temperature superposition.
Rubber elasticity. Elements of rheology and mechanics of Non-Newtonian fluids. Principle deviations from Newtonian behavior. Rheometry. Rotational rheometers. Capillary viscometer. Bagley and Rabinowitsch correction

- 1 general question about polymeric materials morphology
- 1 general question about solid polymer behavior
- 1 general question about fluid polyer behavior
