Training objectives

Goals: learning the fundamental knowledge about urban renaissance and renewal according to the latest scientific theories and guidelines of national and international laws and regulations; the urban renewal and the “future-zero (0)-land-use” as the essential form of development, recognized by the most recent standards as the only possible form of civil-construction activity; development of a case-study.
The Healthy Cities approach: from regional to urban block scale.

Prerequisites

Skills in architectural drawing and CAD; skills in both architectural organism and urban neighborhood design.

Course programme

The concept of Renewal and Urban Renaissance; the Re-urbanization, the Architectural Restoration.
The scale of the project: the region, the metropolis, the city, the village, the neighborhood, the block, the building.
The Urban and Sub-Urban development: characters, morphology, public realm, private space, use, density, transport. The urban and sub-urban contemporary pathologies.
The V.I.P.E.R. (Vulnerability Index for Petrol Expense Rise); the urban-vulnerability of the Italian city-pattern; from the analysis to the index of efficiency of the urban pattern (Medieval, Renaissance, eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth-century, contemporary city) and sub-urban pattern (sub-urbia, slab-urbia, single-family houses). Governance and administrative efficiency.
The principles of the Eco-Compact City. The sytem of the Transect & Urban Code; the Smart Growth Strategy; the New Urbanism theory. Examples at the scale of Rovigo, Ferrara, Bologna, Firenze, Bilbao, Roma, Vienna, Monaco, Parigi.
Sprawl development phase I, II, III. From sprawl to traditional urban neighborhood.
The sprawl-repair-method, EU and USA case-study.
Repair at the Regional Scale: the metropolis, the city, the rural development, repair at the Community Scale: single-familiy subdivision, multi-family subdivision, big-boxes, mall district, urban infill, urban retrofit, mall retrofit. Re-zoning of the shopping center, re-zoning of the multifamily and singlefamily subdivision, rRe-zoning of the businesspark, re-zoning of special district. Repair at the Building Scale.
The public-realm. From Highways to Boulevards project (CNU).

European and Italian context. Analysis of mixed-use building; recurring building types, recurring distribution and functional logic diagrams, plans, recurring patterns of composition of the facades, uses, blocks, buildings, units, accessibility.

Urban Renaissance in EU: case study.
The new urban block of via della Pietra, Bologna; Rue de Laeken, Brussels; via Matteotti, Valenza; Canal Front, Brussel; Tacheles neighborhood centre, Berlin Mitte; the new urban block of Villa Medici, Val d’Europe, Paris.

The examples of the Emilia-Romagna recent laws and urban-regulations. The scale of the public-administration (the Commune) and the job of the urban and architectural designer.
Designing at the urban scale: urban design, architectural design, structural design, building systems.

The next frontier of the Healthy-City Design.

Development of a masterplan exercise and of an architectural building proposal with the support of the professor revisions to the works of the students weekly.

Didactic methods

Lectures mainly with powerpoint support; practical lessons, tutorials design practices (individual and team).

Written/oral examination.
Discussion concerning the design project carried out during the course.
Oral examination concerning the lectures and the reference books.
