Training objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge tools of the theory and technique of foundations and earthworks, acquiring the necessary skills for the evaluation and critical analysis of the information and the surveys results and for the geotechnical and structural design of the works.
The training includes to exercise critical analysis for the drafting of geotechnical models for the design, in order to evaluate the execution techniques that can be applied and the best suited technologies to the realization of the works themselves Prerequisites
- Knowledge of Geotechnics, Construction Science, Hydraulics;
Course programme
- Review of land geotechnics aimed at the design of foundations and earthworks.
Recalls and insights relating to the mechanical behavior of soils.
On site investigations and tests and measurements and means of investigation.
Laboratory geotechnical tests.
On-site monitoring and measurements.
Direct Foundations Theory and Technique.
Criteria for sizing and verification of foundation structures: limit states (ULS, SLE).
Theory and Technique of Indirect, Deep Foundations.
Criteria for sizing and verification of deep-pile foundation structures and diaphragms at limit states.
Description and definition of the Works on Earth.
Design and sizing criteria for earthworks.
Verification and maintenance methods.
Pathologies of foundations and earthworks.
Consolidation criteria of existing works. Didactic methods
- Frontal or remote lessons.
Exercises and workshop with examples of problem solving.
Drafting of a project by the students to be submitted to the teacher during the course for corrections. Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination
The oral exam follows the passing of the written exam.
During the oral exam conducted in person or remotely, the teacher proposes three questions, one of a general nature and two specific ones on application to foundations and earthworks.
The written exam consists in the solution of three problems relating to foundations and earthworks.
The final evaluation will be proposed by the teacher in relation to the results of the written and oral exam of the Candidate. Reference texts
