Training objectives

The course (30 hours= 3 CFU) will provide the basis to manage (solid and liquid) waste from a technical and legislation view point.
The main issues addressed in the course will refer to
technical aspects in waste management
legislation referring to waste management and treatment.
The main skills will be:
-analysis of the different strategies in collecting (urban) solid wastes;
- evaluation of the different environmental impacts of waste treatments and waste recovery
- evaluation of the main economic issues related to waste management

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge on physics, technical and basic knowledge of the principles of chemistry

Course programme

Lessons will refer to:
1) legislation regarding solid wastes: definitions, classifications, required authorizations (4 hours)
2) chemical and biological charcaterization of wastes (2 h)
3) Emas certification, green public procurement, ecolabel (2h)
4) techniques of prevention, waste collection and economic evaluation (2 h)
5) mechanical and biological waste treatments (2 h)
6) incineration (3 h)
7) inertization (2 h)
8) controlled landfill and landfill mining (3 h)
9) liquid waste treatments (2 h)
10) Technical visit to the incineration of the town of Ferrara (5 h)

Didactic methods

Front lessons based on slides (available for students) and other materials.

Learning assessment procedures

The final exam (oral) will aim to verify the knowledge acquired by the student in the different topics addressed during the lessons. In particular, it will be based on three parts referring to :
- techncial and legislative aspects regarding waste definition and classification;
- technological aspects related to the collection and transport of wastes to the treatment or recovery plants;
- definition of the tarif for the collection and treatment/recovery services.
