Training objectives

The course provides elements for the design and analysis of digital and analog wireless communication systems.

The principal knowledge acquired regard signal filtering, modulation techniques, link budget, basis of antennas, characterization of noise and interference, wireless channel modeling, performance evaluation, and tradeoff between costs and performance. Examples of design from significant applications are also given.

At the end of the course the student will be able to design wireless and wired communication systems, characterize signal-to-noise ratio and spectral efficiency, determine the performance and design a communication system, apply knowledge in probability and statistics to the design and analysis of the transmission of random sequences of bits over random channels.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge from
- the course Signals and Communications
- probability theory ad statistics.

Course programme

- Digital baseband communication systems
- Digital modulation and demodulation techniques
- Digital passband communication systems
- Performance of digital communication systems on band-unlimited and band-limited channels
- Performance vs. spectral efficiency trade-off
- Wireless channel (flat and selective fading)
- Introduction to multicarrier systems and coding
- Introduction to diversity techniques
- Characterization of analog communication systems performance
- Characterization of memoryless nonlinear effects on modulated signals
- Introduction to localization systems
- Applications (design examples)

Didactic methods

The course consists of lessons from the instructor in class for all the arguments. For each argument theory will be followed by exercises. Additional exercises will be offered for individual study. An experimental activity in lab is also carried out.

The material for the students is available in English.

Learning assessment procedures

The examination is organized to allow the verification of knowledge learned with respect to the course program.

The examination consists in a written and in an oral part.
- The written part is an exercise with multiple questions regarding a simplified project of an analog or a digital communication system. The kind of exercise is similar to those solved together with the instructor.
- The oral part consists of a couple of questions spanning over the topics of the course.

The two parts are sustained in the same day, and the oral part can be accessed only if the written part is considered sufficient. The final score accounts for both written and oral part.

The exam can be done in English.

The positive outcome of the examination shows the acquisition of knowledge and abilities specified in the course objectives.
