Training objectives

Main knowledge:
knowledge of the Roman legal structure and
of the system of legal sources;
understanding the fundamental dynamics of the formation of the juridical rule in the age of monarchy, in the Republic and in the Principate;
knowledge of the leges publicae, the constitutiones principis, the senatusconsulta;
understanding of the role of interpretatio iuris and that of jurisprudence
Main skills:
interpretation of legal texts in the light of historical events;
reconstruction of Roman legal experience.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of ancient history;
adequate logical skills;
Aptitude for reasoning.

Course programme

The historical analysis of some fundamental aspects of the legal civilization of ancient Rome from the origins to the Justinian age: the legal definition of social relations (10 hours), the historical development of political institutions, the legal sources (10 hours), the jurisprudence (10 hours), the definition of law by the jurists of the Roman Principality (10 hours).

Didactic methods

Roman public law is described with particular attention to the role of jurisprudence. The comparison with the ancient sources, historical and legal is constant. When possible, the lessons are introduced with the examination of photocopies of documents distributed to students. To the students is made available a written description of the main content of the course - illustrated during each lesson - in the form of global summary of the topics.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of an oral examination, which includes an adequate number of questions to assess the candidate's knowledge. Knowledge and critical understanding of the content are checked. The vote is the vote of the media assigned to each answer.
