Training objectives

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Apply the scientific principles relative to the design, manufacture and quality control of liquid and semi-solid pharmaceutical formulations.
2. Fabricate magisterial and galenic preparations based on liquid and semisolid forms.
3. Perform the pharmaceutical compounding and dispensing, assays of Italian and European Pharmacopoeias on on liquid and semisolid forms.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the principles of Physics, General and inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry, Biochemistry.

- Medicines (Marketing Authorisation) Regulations
- Liquid dosage forms
- Solutions and their properties, solubility and dissolution process
- Disperse systems, colloidal systems
- Surface and interfacial phenomena
- Classes and properties of surfactants and emulsifiers
- Micelles and microemulsions: phase diagrams, pharmaceutical applications
- Suspensions: physico-chemical characteristics, preparation, excipients, stability
- Emulsions: physico-chemical characteristics, preparation, excipients, stability
- Parenteral preparations
- Formulations for peptides and proteins
- Advanced drug delivery systems: liposomes, nanosystems, polymeric prodrugs
- Principles of sterilisation procedures
- Packs and packaging for medicines
- Ophthalmic preparations
- Preparations for cutaneous applications

Learning assessment procedures

The methods by which the effective acquisition of knowledge and skills provided, is based on an oral assessment to be carried out on the blackboard.
The evaluation of knowledge will be conducted with questions designed to ascertain the actual acquisition by students of knowledge and skills described in the "Aims"). Final assessment (final grade) will be obtained by a careful analysis of the responses of the student taking into account both the purely technical notional and the display capacity of the student.
