SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course has as main objective the preparation of graduates with theoretical and practical knowledge in the key disciplines of the drug discovery process as well in the production , formulation and distribution of medicines. In particular the Course is aimed to the formation of professional figures with high skills in: Inorganic Chemistry; Organic Chemistry, useful for the comprehension of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of drugs; Analytical Chemistry, useful for drug quality check; Human Anatomy and Physiology; Basic notion of microbiology and pathology, useful for the knowledge of diseases; Biochemistry, of fundamental importance for the understanding of metabolic processes and molecular mechanisms of drug mechanism of action; Medicinal Chemistry, that provides the knowledge of the main drug classes and their mechanism of action; Pharmaceutical Technology, which studies the drug formulations and their preparation in a pharmacy or in the industry; Principles of pharmaceutical legislation, useful for the professional practice; Pharmacology, Pharmacotherapy and Toxicology, that study way of administration, metabolism and toxicity of drugs; Pharmacognosy, that studies drugs deriving from plants.

The acquired skills allow graduates to address all the problems related to drug design and development. Considering that the preparation is primarily targeted to a career in a pharmaceutical industry, the course is particularly focused on chemical disciplines, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical technology. Moreover, a special emphasis is given to laboratory activities.
