Training objectives

The course will make the students aware of the importance of organic chemistry in the study of molecular sciences.
Knowledge:
Students will have to know the basic preparation methods and chemical-physical properties of the most representative classes of carbon compounds.
Skills:
a) Students will have to be able to explain the reactivity of the most important functional groups;
b) Students will have to be able to apply the acquired knowledge in the solution of easy problems.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of General Chemistry (preparatory teaching to the course of Organic Chemistry).

Course programme

The course is scheduled for a total amount of 76 hours of whom 64 are frontal lectures and 12 are guided tutorial in labs.
Chemical bonds and factors that determine molecular shape. Representation of molecular structures and chemical nomenclature. Resonance forms. Structural isomers and conformers. Stereoisomers. Proton transfer reactions. Functional groups.
Structure, nomenclature and physical properties. Organic reactions. Curved arrows to depict reaction mechanisms. [20 h].
Electrophilic addition to alkenes. Radical reactions. Nucleophilic substitution to tetrahedral carbon. Nucleofuges and nucleophiles. Elimination reactions. Alcohols, Ethers, Epoxides. Organometallic reagents. Nucleophilic addition to carbonyl group. Carboxylic acid derivatives, Nucleophilic substitution to carbonyl group. [44 h].

Pratical Exercitations:

Preparation of ethyl 2-(2-methyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)acetate.
Purification of organic compounds by acid-base extraction.
Fischer esterification
[12 hours].

Didactic methods

The course is organized as follows: frontal lectures with the aid of blackboards and molecular models. Student participation is part of the lecture: students are in fact continuously solicited to give their own contribution to the analysis and development of the concepts explained. They are guided to catch the connections which link the fundamental principles and to apply the logic which is at the basis of organic chemistry. Three practice exercises of 4 hours each for a maximum of 40 students at a time. To pass the exam students have to present a written report on the three lab experiences.

Learning assessment procedures

Written test on the following topics: proton transfer reactions, stereochemistry, alkenes, alkynes, aliphatic halides, alcohols, ethers, epoxide, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives. Time allowed for the test is 1h. Students are not allowed to consult tests, notes or to use smart phones, PCs. Students are asked to solve ten exercises entailing three answers (1/30 point for each answer). To be admitted to the oral exam students have to present a written report on the lab training activity. Those who get at least 18 out 30 can take the oral exam during which students can go through their written test and its marking. Little time is always given over to the discussion and explanation of incomplete or inexhaustive answers.
