Training objectives
- The goal of the course consists in learning a set of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, provided by sample and census surveys, to support decision making processes in business and economics.
At the end of the course the student will acquire the following skills:
- synthesis and description of the information provided by the surveyed data
- estimation of the population parameters (mean, variance, proportion,.)
- test of hypotheses about parameters of one or more populations
- prediction of the values of some variables by means of simple linear models Prerequisites
- Basic notions of mathematics and in particular related to the following topics are required:
- techniques to solve first degree equations and inequalities
- study of functions
- limit of a function
- derivatives and integrals
- minimization and maximization problems
- combinatorics
- polynomial, logarithmic and exponential functions Course programme
- 1. Descriptive statistics: graphs, location and variability measures, dependence and independence, correlation. Theory and exercises (16 hours).
2. Probabilities: basic notions and properties, Bayes' theorem, continuous and discrete distributions. Theory and exercises (12 hours).
3. Inferential statistics: statistical sampling, point estimates, interval estimates, test of hypotheses, simple linear regression. Theory and exercises (28 hours). Didactic methods
- Lectures in the classroom.
Tutorials are also provided, together with theoretical lessons, to teach how to use the studied statistical methods to solve real problems.
The following Classrooms will also be used for communications and sharing of material:
for all students, code 5obujpf;
for those wishing to take advantage of the tutoring, code eudqzzw. Learning assessment procedures
- Written exam.
The goal of the exam is to assess the level of achievement of the previously mentioned educational goals.
The exam consists of a list of multiple choice questions: 2 questions concern descriptive statistics; 2 questions concern inferential statistics; 2 questions concern a problem of probability; 3 questions concern a problem of regression analysis; 2 questions concern the theory of the statistical methods. Time allowed: 45 minutes.
The questions focus on theoretical aspects, on the ability of reasoning, of correct application of the methods, and of interpretation of the results.
For each question, a score equal to +3 is given in case of right answer, a score equal to 0 in case of wrong answer (or missing answer). The final mark is the sum of the scores of the single questions.
To pass the exam, the student needs to attain a score greater than or equal to 18 (6 correct answers). Reference texts
