Training objectives

The goal of the course is to provide the knowledge and conceptual tools in order to be able to perform an organizational analysis. A specific focus will be given to issues of work organization, coordination, organizational design and human resource management.
At the end of the course students will be able to assess the coherence of the organizational design of a company, to interpret the organizational policies while utilizing different conceptual postures, and to identify alternative organizational solutions to specific problems.

Prerequisites

It is helpful, for a successful learning experience in this course, to know and understand the basic concepts about business economics.

First part (about 6 hours)
- Introduction to the concept of organization and organizational rationality

Second part (about 14 hours)
- General introduction to work organization
- Taylorism and Scientific Management
- Informal organization and the Human Relations approach
- Human motivation
- Job design

Third part (about 20 hours)
- Interdependence and coordination
- Organizational design according to Mintzberg
- The technological contingency approach
- The environmental contingency approach
- Herbert Simon’s approach
- Organizational assessment
- Organizational boundaries

Fourth part (about 16 hours)
- People and organizations
- Negotiation and compensation
- Managing discretion
- Case studies

Didactic methods

Mostly traditional lectures. Some interactive exercises, towards the end of the course, with collective discussion about short videos or case studies about real companies, coordinated by the teacher.

Learning assessment procedures

Written examination.
The exam aims at testing the level of achievement of the learning objectives as indicated above. The exam is divided in two parts: 15 multiple choice questions (15 points) and 3 open-ended questions (15 points).
Both parts have the purpose to verify the knowledge that the students acquired about all the topics of the course.
The final grade is the sum of the scores of the two parts. To pass the exam the student must obtain a minimum score of 18 out of 30.
