Training objectives

Electromagnetic Compatibility is the discipline that studies the causes that give rise to electromagnetic interference and methods of coupling with devices. To the student are explained the techniques, the measurement environments and measurement instrumentation for the evaluation of electromagnetic phenomena of interest for compatibility, the design features to be taken to achieve the fulfillment of the Essential Requirements recalled by the European Directive, which require that the equipment must be designed and constructed so as to avoid to generate an excessive level of disturbances, and so that they can properly work in the presence of typical disturbances of the environment which they are intended.
The main knowledge gained will be:
- European Directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility, European Technical and regulatory framework, the CE marking obligation on manufacturers
- Approach "compatible" in the design of electronic boards and devices
- Overview of all the kinds of electromagnetic disturbances that have influence in the behavior of the boards and apparatuses
- Measurement Environments for the correct evaluation of the intensity of the electromagnetic disturbances; measurement instrumentation for the evaluation of the emission and immunity requirements, with regard to anechoic and semi-anechoic chamber, to the antennas, to the spectrum analyzer; measurement methods
With this knowledge, the student will be able to undertake the design of electronic circuits, boards and devices with a sufficient level of awareness on the typical problems of electromagnetic compatibility, and to address them properly having the skills to recognize, classify, measure them and possibly deepen the study case by case

Prerequisites

Theoretical knowledge of Electromagnetics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering.
They require basic skills that enable the student to understand the topics explained in class. Because the course includes topics such as antennas, propagation of disturbances, filters, it requires a basic knowledge on the propagation of electromagnetic waves, the various types of passive RC and LC filters, on the antennas

Course programme

Directives and standards on electromagnetic compatibility (7 hours)
Compatible design principles (5 hours)
Propagation in free space and with reflection (5 hours)
Elementary sources of electric and magnetic field (2 hours)
Elementary antennas, antennas for measurements. Antenna Factor (4 hours)
Sources of radiated emission. Near fields and far fields from elementary and real sources (2 hours)
Spectrum analyzer: architecture, working principle, characteristics and performance (8 hours)
Shielded, semi-anechoic and anechoic chamber. Measurements of radiated emissions: methods and instrumentation (4 hours)
Radiated Immunity: instrumentation and test method (2 hours)
Electromagnetic shields: shielding effectiveness, attenuation by absorption and reflection; low-frequency shielding (4 hours)
Conducted emissions: generation causes, instruments and measuring methods, mains filters (4 hours)
Electro Static Discharges: characterization of the phenomena, friendly design, measuring (5 hours methods and tools)
Crosstalk: characterization of the phenomena, the study of solutions for mitigation. Signal integrity: reflections in the tracks (6 hours)
Workshop: 2 hours, to be determined based on availability

Didactic methods

Theoretical lessons on all topics of the course. The teacher illustrates whenever the objectives of the lesson, the area in which is the framework for subjects covered, the links with the other subjects of the course.
Visit in the laboratory: during the course is programmed a visit (or more visits, according to the instantaneous availability) at the University Laboratory of Electromagnetic Compatibility (LUCE), where they are in-depth knowledge about the measurement environment (anechoic and semi-anechoic chamber) to the instrumentation and the methods of measurement

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is administered orally, in a single session that includes all the topics of the course. Students are assigned three different topics that he will develop through oral exposure, with the aid, if appropriate, of paper for all the parts that require drawings or written demonstrations.

Passing the final exam is the proof that knowledge and abilities outlined in the training objectives of the course have been achieved.

Reference texts

Basic Text: all topics of the course are given in the handouts available in paper form, as well as in interactive CD that the student can take directly to the Teacher. With these documents, the student can achieve a complete preparation and address the Assessment with full profit
Additional material: for the parts relating to the technical regulations and directives, because of their rapid evolution, see, the material made available on the Site of the teacher and still available "on line" in the European Union website. This additional material should be considered as a real-time update to that reported in handouts
Text recommended for the deepening of the matter: Electromagnetic Compatibility (Clayton R.Paul, ed. Hoepli)
