Training objectives

The students will acquire the ability to recognize the physical nature and production process of the work of art, the work organization within the ¿bottega¿ first, and then in the artists¿ studios, the timing and structure of the work process, the relationship with Arts schools (Accademie) and with patrons. The ultimate aim is to enable students to appreciate the practical elements that enter into the production of a work of art through the centuries.

Course programme

This course, after an introduction which illustrates the subject aims and tools, will focalize its attentions on history of portraiture as a genre in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with particular reference to the role of portraits in the relationship between patron and artist and the display of portraits in the aristocratic collections.

Didactic methods

Front lessons with projections of slides and powerpoint. Seminars of important international scholars.
Workshops about exhibitions planning and cultural itineraries
It's compulsory to attend the conferences of the the series "Il Museo. Dentro e intorno", as an integral part of the program.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination
Four question about about italian art history of the 16th and 17th century, regarding specific aspects of artists and works of art.
The examination will last 20 minutes.
