Aims and objectives “From decoding to understanding” As university students have difficulties in reading literature, one aim of the project is to improve the reading abilities of upper secondary students, by supplying them with adequate and well-adapted working tools for reading and interpreting literature.

We will help the students to acquire the ability to analyze and critically evaluate, both in writing and speaking, literary texts of various genres, and degrees of sophistication. Another purpose is to develop methods of reading which will motivate students to address more demanding texts, and also make it possible for them to carry out reflective in-depth readings.

The reading process should go from decoding to understanding. It takes a development of one’s given process to become a proficient reader. In this context, literature is an unparalleled asset for all that it can offer in the form of knowledge about human nature.

By reflecting on one’s own experience of living literature, the students will acquire a greater empathy, tolerance and ability to understand not only human nature, but also different cultures and values. In the process of understanding literary texts, students will be given the opportunity of shaping and developing a personal language, which will improve their communicative skills. With such proficiency, they will be considerably better equipped for the challenges of tomorrow’s working life within the European community. It is important that we prepare our students and make them confident and competent to meet with the demands of a competitive Europe.

One very important aim of this project is to develop and provide good methods for reading and analysing literature in English and to be able to communicate the outcome with students of the other participating countries. By using internet and a various forms of communication programmes the students will be able to practice a foreign language in authentic situations.

Our goal is to make our students aware of how to learn. Through developing new pedagogical methods in reading literature, and by combining those new methods with self –assessments, the students will be able to reflect on their own learning process. This will take place notably through reading logs, journals, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, exchange of ideas and experience of the work in progress via the website and a virtual classroom. All these activities will involve both teachers and students.
