Training objectives

The course integrates with the "Final Synthesis Lab 1" course, in the development of the project that constitutes the final thesis work. It gives the students an opportunity to experiment the development of the project in direct contact with a specific industrial environment and to verify their skills in self-management and programming.
In the "Final Synthesis Lab 2" the student is guided, through the contribution of several disciplines, to the mature and complete preparation of a Design project of innovative products and services, based on the study of a real case related to a specific application field. This final synthesis laboratory aims to allow students to apply the skills, concepts and methods of work that can be acquired in the course of study of this degree course, to the development of solutions for "health and wellness", ie the study of products and services oriented towards favoring the health and wellbeing of users, able to help people to lead healthy and compatible lifestyles, increase their awareness about their state of health and prolong their active life and autonomy. The products or services object of the projects developed during the course will start from specifications coming from the market and from the industrial and biomedical entities operating in the sectors of products for wellness, fitness, rehabilitation, autonomy of elderly or handicapped persons and biomedical products.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites required.

Course programme

The "Product Design for Health" module aims to provide methodological and design tools for the integrated design of instruments, consumer products and services based on a systemic understanding of the needs of end users and professional operators.
The "Product Engineering for biomedical and wellness" module aims to provide specific criteria, methodologies and operational tools for functional and detailed design, quality control and assessment of vibro-acoustic comfort.
The module of "Materials and product perfomances for biomedical and wellness" aims to provide specific criteria, methodologies and operational tools for the selection of materials in the biomedical and wellness field, in relation to their functionality and resistance and to production processes.
The "Smart ICT for biomedical and wellness" module aims to provide criteria, methodologies and present the specific operational tools for the development of applications and hmi for smart devices for biomedical and wellness, also with attention to data protection issues of users' personal data.
The main skills acquired will be:
• Working methods and techniques in a multidisciplinary team.
• Product definition methodologies and techniques.
• Project management methodologies and techniques.
• Innovative industrial processes.
• Technologies for interaction, ICT, smart objects, automation.
• Methodologies and techniques for the integrated design of products and services.
The main skills (ie the ability to apply the acquired knowledge) will be:
• Integrate knowledge and manage complexity in design.
• Develop innovative solutions in response to the needs of potential users.
• Develop innovative solutions in response to the requirements defined in the product and project specifications.
• Manage the project from the creative phase of concept design up to the executive design.
• Select technical solutions, materials, and processing technologies and production systems.
• Manage processes of integration of digital technologies and advanced manufacturing for the development of new types of products.

Didactic methods

The teaching methodology of the Final Synthesis Laboratory is of the 'learning by doing' type, as it is aimed at making the student acquire the ability to develop a design project for innovative products and services. To obtain this, the Laboratory provides for the contribution of several disciplines that are closely integrated; the teaching of the laboratory is planned and coordinated by the teacher of the characterizing discipline in collaboration with the teachers of each module, so as to ensure a fruitful interaction between the disciplines and avoid overlaps on the topics developed and educational overloads. A shared planning IT platform will be used between the modules for a single project management. Faced with a minority of hours devoted to lectures on topics related to the project theme, the course is mainly conducted with laboratory activities assisted by teachers, aimed at developing the thesis project; the course also foresees autonomous laboratory activities for the realization of the project, carried out by the students individually and in a team.

Learning assessment procedures

The verification of the acquisition of skills and abilities will take place through the verification and final discussion of the developed project in which particular attention will be paid to the interdisciplinary aspects. The project development method, described in a report, and project documents will be evaluated.
